Mattaes Phillipou has inked a new deal to reaffirm his commitment to the red, white and black, signing a two-year contract extension to keep him in St Kilda colours until at least the end of 2026.

After joining the club via pick No. 10 in the 2022 National Draft, the 19-year-old hasn’t missed a game since making his debut in Round 1 of last year.

The versatile youngster has shown his ability to play in various positions, making his influence felt both forward and in the middle as he continues to develop his game at the highest level.

The Woodville-West Torrens product said he was thrilled to be at RSEA Park for an additional two years.

“I couldn’t be loving it more,” Phillipou said.

“I’m still just trying to be a sponge and learn as much as I can from my coaches and teammates.

I’ve still got a lot to learn and many things to improve, but I’m focused on taking all the steps necessary to get where not only I want to be as an individual, but we want to be as a group.

“It’s exciting to be part of a young group which is growing together, and I look forward to us continuing to improve and play together for a long time to come.”

Part of a youthful core including Mitchito Owens, Marcus Windhager, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Darcy Wilson, Hugo Garcia, Lance Collard, Anthony Caminiti and Angus Hastie – all aged 21 or under – Phillipou is an important part of the Saints’ future seasons.

“We’re really pleased to have Mattaes reaffirm his commitment to the club through this extension,” EGM Football David Misson said.

“We are confident that if his diligence and professionalism continues on this trajectory he has a long and exciting career ahead of him.”
