The possibility of returning to September might be on the horizon, albeit in the distance, but the Saints won’t be lured into looking too far ahead, says Mav Weller.

Saturday night’s 15-point win over the Western Bulldogs keeps St Kilda’s faint finals hopes alive, with their ninth win of the season moving the Saints up to ninth position on the ladder, two games adrift of eighth-placed North Melbourne.

Weller, who produced arguably his strongest performance of 2016 after overcoming a nasty head knock in the opening minutes, believes the Saints are starting to click at the business end of the season.

“We’re really starting to click; the game plan, the style we want to play; there’s a bit of continuity in the team now. It’s really pleasing,” Weller told saints.com.au after Saturday night’s win over the Bulldogs.

“It’s the old cliché one week at a time, but our group is playing the way we want to play.

“Whatever happens happens, but we’ll go out against North next week and give them our all and see where it gets us.”

Weller praised the performance of star midfielder Jack Steven, after the game-breaker produced another best on ground effort to firm as a Brownlow medal contender.

In another brilliant display, Steven amassed a whopping 26 disposals by half-time, before finishing with 39 for the night, along with seven tackles, six clearances and a goal.

“He’s just like a little energiser bunny, you can’t go with him,” Weller said.

“He’s effort around the ball, just his one and two and three efforts to just chase, tackle, pressure and then he ends up getting the ball and he starts our uncontested chain. He’s been fantastic all year and good on him.”
