WE ARE up to the task.

That was Luke Dunstan’s message following Saturday night’s upset win over Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.

The Saints caused an upset win on Saturday night against Gold Coast, overcoming a six-day break to post a 28-point victory over Rodney Eade’s men.

After the win, Dunstan said the team would immediately turn its attention to Friday night’s blockbuster against Collingwood.

“Obviously we’ll put in all the steps for recovery over the next 48 hours and we’ll get back to training,” Dunstan told SAINTS.com.au.

“We did it this week so there’s no reason we can’t do it next week.”

The Saints have unearthed a variety of stars in the opening two weeks of the season with some instant results, not dissimilar to Dunstan this time last year.

Elevated rookie Jack Sinclair had 19 disposals, while Jack Lonie collected 15 possessions and took six marks. Both newcomers also kicked their first AFL goals with Sinclair effectively kicking the sealer after a late charge from the Suns.

“I think two of the first year boys that are playing are very impressive - Jacky Lonie and Jacky Sinclair,” Dunstan said.

“Sincs kicked two and did some really hard running forward so they’re going strength to strength and improving every week.”

Almost one third of St Kilda’s team had played fewer than 20 career games ahead of Saturday night, with another three having played between 20-30 AFL matches.

The fact the Saints were able to play ‘tempo football’ and compete physically in spite of their relative inexperience was a credit to the team Dunstan said.

“Obviously we want to try and slow our ball movement down but first you’ve just got to win the contest and get your hands on the footy,” he said.

“We tried to do that the best we could, but they were going pretty well there for most of the last quarter, but we managed to peg them back in the last ten minutes.

“I think the dewy and wet conditions played a part in that, but it was pretty bash and crash which is good and I think that sort of suited our game style a little bit for all our inside midfielders. It was good, I enjoyed it.”
